POST-GRADUATE (M.A.) PROGRAMME IN ECONOMICS
GENERAL INFORMATION

I ENROLMENT

(a) For Graduates of Mumbai University/Other Universities:

Those who have obtained the B.A. degree from the University of Mumbai or a corresponding equivalent degree of any other University recognized are eligible for admission to the M.A. courses in economics in the Department of Economics.

As a rule, admission to M.A. with Entire Economics (Groups I and II) shall be confined only to those students who have passed the B.A. in Economics and have obtained at least 45 percent marks in the six papers programme in Economics. Typically, the minimum cut-off percentage is much higher than 45 percent though special concessions as per rules are available to students from reserved category. However, graduates of this University in faculties other than the Faculty of Arts, or those who have passed an equivalent examination of another recognized University, as well as those who do not have an undergraduate degree in Economics, seeking admission
to M.A. will be required to pass a written change-of-faculty test comprising 2 papers in: (i) Economic theory and (ii) a paper to test the students general acquaintance with the Indian economy.

(b) For Inter-collegiate Students:

Students, who have enrolled themselves in any of the constituent colleges where there is a recognized teacher in the subject offered by them and who will be attending lectures in the Department under the scheme of inter-collegiate lectures, should
begin attending such lectures from the beginning of the first term and supply necessary information regarding themselves, to the office of the Department. This information has to be supplied by them at the beginning of each term failing which
their attendance at lectures and seminars will not be recorded.

(c) For Graduates of Other Universities:

A graduate of another University seeking admission to the Department shall apply to the Registrar of this University for a provisional statement of eligibility. Admission is contingent on the production of a provisional statement of eligibility, signed by the Registrar of the University. The Registrar may issue a provisional statement of eligibility if the applicant is prima facie eligible for admission to the University. The applicant must subsequently obtain final eligibility statement before the close of the academic term in which the student has been provisionally admitted. Admission to the Department and attendance at lectures during the term are liable to be cancelled if the student fails to get the final eligibility confirmed before the due date.

(d) Procedure for Admission:

(i) Fresh Admission: All students seeking admission to the Department for the first time shall submit an application in the prescribed form along with the prescribed fees. The student should also submit the following along with the application for admission:
(1) an application for post-graduate registration, together with the fee prescribed, (2) an application for a transference certificate if s/he is requesting transfer to the Department from a constituent College of the University of Mumbai, or a provisional eligibility certificate issued by the Registrar, University of Mumbai if s/he is migrating to this University from another University and (3) statements of marks obtained at the F.Y.B.A., S.Y.B.A., and T.Y.B.A. examinations, together with certified copies.

(ii) Application Forms: For admission to M.A. Part I, forms will be available at the Accounts Section; and for M.A. Part II, they will be available in the office of the Department at Rs. 100/- per form.

(iii) Time of Admission: Students intending to read for the M.A. degree examination will be admitted only in the beginning of the academic year. Applications for admission are generally accepted after the declaration of B.A. degree examination results of this University. Late applications will not be considered.

(iv) Renewal of Admission: All students (including inter-collegiate students) who wish to continue in the Department in their M.A. Part II are required to renew their admission
as per the announced last date, by filling in the prescribed application form and paying term fees.

(e) Transference Certificate:

No student of a constituent college or of a recognized institution of this University shall be admitted to the Department unless s/he produces a Transference Certificate.

A student migrating from this Institution to any other one shall be charged a fee of Rs. 100/- for a Transference Certificate.

(f) Terms: The duration of the two terms will be as follows:

First Term: 9th June, 2003 to 10th October, 2003

Second Term: 7th November, 2003 to 30th April, 2004

There will be a winter break from 25th December 2003 to 1st January, 2004 (both days inclusive)

(g) Term Fees:

(1) Part I students will be charged Rs. 5/- for the Registration Form as well as a Registration Fee of Rs. 800/-. There is no registration fee for Part II students.

(2) A Tuition fee of Rs. 1,000/- per annum is charged to students joining the Department for the M.A. degree. This fee must be paid in full at the time of submitting the form for admission to the Department. Tuition fees once paid shall not be refunded even if the student fails to continue in the Department. Tuition fees for foreign students will be Rs. 5,000/. (For details regarding refund of tuition fees, students are requested to contact the Superintendent, Department of Economics).

(3) In addition to this, there is a Library fee of Rs.600/- per annum for all M.A. students.

(4) Every student is also charged Union fees of Rs. 10/- per annum.

Students who fail to pay their tuition fees for both the terms before the announced last date will have to pay
a penalty of Rs. 15/- per month.

Cheques or Postal Orders will not be accepted for payment of tuition fees, or any other dues.

(h) Caution Money:

A sum of Rs. 10/- will be charged as caution money deposit from every student joining the Department. The amount will be returned when the student leaves the Department, provided s/he has paid in full all claims.

Refund of caution money deposit should be claimed within a year from the day of leaving the Department. Caution money not claimed is liable to be forfeited.

II SCHOLARSHIPS AND FREE STUDENTSHIPS

According to circular number BCC/257/of 2001 of the University of Mumbai no tuition fees and examination fees are to be charged by University Departments to students belonging to the Scheduled Castes including Nav-Buddhists, Scheduled Tribes, and DT/NT categories at the time of admission to a course/examination. It may be noted that a bond in a suitable form will be taken from the candidate concerned to the effect that if his/her claim for freeship is not accepted by the Social Welfare Department, Government of Maharashtra, he/she shall pay the amount towards the tuition fees and examination fees etc. to the University Department in which he/she is admitted and sent up for examination. Any further clarification in this behalf can be obtained from the Director of Social Welfare Department, Pune 1, Government of Maharashtra.


The Department provides a limited number of scholarships and fellowships for M.A. students. The details regarding these are provided below:

(a) Scholarships: There are about 35 Merit Scholarships of Rs. 900/- per annum each for students of the Department registered for the M.A. degree by papers. These scholarships are awarded on merit as indicated by the B.A. examination results of the candidates or by the M.A. Part I examination results of the University.

(b) Government of India Post-Matric Scholarships to Backward Class Students: The scheme of grant of the Government of India (GOI) Scholarship for Backward Class students (SCs/STs/NTs/VJs and STs outside Specified Area in Vidharbha) for post SSC course is implemented by the Director of Social Welfare, Pune. All Backward Class students undertaking approved post SSC courses, and who satisfy the requisite criteria, are considered eligible for the GOI Scholarship. Students who are eligible for the GOI Scholarship will not be required to pay tuition fees to the University.

III AWARDS AT THE M.A. EXAMINATION IN ECONOMICS

The following Prizes are awarded at the M.A. Degree Examination:

(a) Professor M.J. Manohar Gold Medal: Awarded annually to a student of this Department securing the highest marks in the four papers comprising Economics Group (I) and securing an overall First Class at M.A.

(b) The Seth Mangaldas Jeshingbhai Economics Prize: Awarded annually to the candidate securing the highest marks in the four papers comprising Economics Group (I).

(c) The H.R. Batheja Gold Medal: Awarded annually to the candidate securing the highest marks in the two-paper? Industrial Economics? optional group offered in Economics Group (II).

(d) The Ranchhoddas Lotvala Foundation Economics Prize: Awarded annually to the candidate securing the highest marks in all the eight papers in Economics.

(e) The Dr. (Miss) Asha L. Datar Smarak Swarna Padak: Awarded annually to the candidate securing the highest marks in all the eight papers in Economics.

(f) The Chancellors Medal: Awarded annually to the candidate who passes the examination in the First Class with the highest number of marks in the branch of study notified for the year.

(g) The Dr. Vibhooti Shukla Memorial Prizes: Awarded annually to the candidate who secures the highest number of marks in Economics (Group I) at the M.A. degree examination from among the successful candidates who appear at the examination through the Department of Economics.
