FORMER HEADS OF THE DEPARTMENT OF HISTORY

Dr. G. M. Moraes was the first Professor and Head of the Department. He had the distinction of being the General President of the Indian History Congress in a premier body of historians in the country.

Dr. SarDesai a well know historian of South East Asia succeeded Professor Moraes as Professor and Head in 1971. He however left the department a year after his appointment to take up a Chair in the University of California and Los Angeles, U. S. A.

Dr. Mrs.A.J.Syed, historian of Medieval India was Professor and Head of the Department from 1975 to 1990. She had the honour of presiding over the Medieval Indian Section of the 1985 session of the Indian History Congress.

On Dr.Syed's retirement, Professor J.V.Naik, historian of Modern India and Nineteenth Century Reform Movements took charge of the Department and later filled the post of Professor and Head of the Department from which he retired in May 1994.

Dr. Mrs M.Dossal was appointed Ag. Head from June to August 1994.

Dr. M.D. David , Urban Historian was Professor and Head of the Department from September 1994 to October 1995.

Since November 1995, Dr. Mrs. M. Dossal, Reader, was in charge of the Department till March 1997 when she was appointed Professor and Head of the Department. She was awarded the Professor Hiralal Gupta Award for the best book written by a women Historian for the period 1990/1994. She was also awarded the Rockefeller Foundation Residency at Bellagio, Italy April-May 1995 and the Indo-US Visitorship under the Fulbright Program, State University of New York, Binghamton, February-May 1993.
